I visited Lanhydrock House - (photo below LOL)at the weekend and would recommend a visit to anyone. It is located near Bodmin in Cornwall and dates from the 17th century.
The Jacobean shell is lined with a Victorian interior due to the house being gutted by fire in 1881 (the year my paternal grandfather was born amazingly enough!!!)and the interior took 4 years to rebuild. The combination works beautifully. The house is stunning yet not the often grotesque over the top show of opulence that many British Stately homes often are guilty of. It is stylish, elegant and homely. It was gifted to the National Trust by the 7th Viscount of Clifden in 1953. At almost £10 for an adult it is pricey but well worth it with 50 rooms to meander through from the many kitchens below stairs through the residential rooms and up to the servants quarters at the very top of the house.
The house is like the Marie Celeste - every room is fully furnished including all the nic nacs and ornaments which would have been there when the family were in residence. The kitchens are still fully kitted out with everything from the massive range with several spits, the crockery down to an implement for making sugar lumps from a sugar loaf.
I was amazed by the kitchens and the variety and quality of menus and food they prepared in these many rooms. There seemed a different room for every different cooking process from baking the bread to smoking the fish.
The servants quarters were particularly impressive. Decent sized cosy rooms with comfy bed and a big comfy chair. They all had a fireplace and by the clothes, books, pictures present in the rooms - it seemed they had a comfortable life.
Top tips I would give though are as follows:
If you have mobility problems do not use the main car park but drive down to the one nearer the house
Do not wear high heels/stilettos as they will make you take them off and wear weird little foam slippers
Give the cafe a miss - the coffee was tasteless and I have it on good authority that the millionaire's shortbread (at £1.95 per slice so probably best being a millionaire to buy it) looked much much better than it tasted
If you think you will visit another three or four National Trust Properties in the year you are probably best buying annual membership rather than paying the £9 odds one off entrance fee to get into Lanhydrock House
Notwithstanding all of the above - please go and see it if you are in the area - it is a fascinating place!!!
